The 411 on Detangling⠀

We naturals know how STRESSFUL tangles can get. Not only do they upset you and your home girls, *wink wink* they are counterproductive to hair growth and length retention.

Find out more on detangling in this week’s piece!

Top 3 Things You’ll Need to Detangle

1. The Right Technique

Starting from the ends and gently work your way up to your roots. AND RELAX. Take your time to avoid breakage and split ends. Additionally, separating your hair into sections and working on one piece at a time reduces the likelihood of future tangling!

2. The Right Product

Applying a product that your hair loves is a win in the detangling process! Working with damp hair or hair covered in conditioner gives you enough slip to move through your curls with ease.

3. The Right Tools

Because no hair texture is the same, it is important to assess your natural hair before choosing your detangling tools. Not to worry! there is no right or wrong tool for detangling, you can go off of your personal preference. Whatever tools you decide on, make sure you are using the right technique. When Should You Detangle?

Pre-Detangling

Detangling the hair while pre-pooing (before shampoo) is a useful trick after taking down a protective style. By removing a majority of shed hair in advance, you are eliminating the amount of tangling (and in turn breakage) you may experience while shampooing.⠀

Post-Detangling⠀

Most naturals prefer to detangling after shampooing. Adding a conditioner provides slip and makes the hair easier to maneuver and detangle. ⠀

Overall, your decision on when to detangle is purely based on your personal hair regimen. We recommend trying both to figure out the best method for you!⠀

The 411 In Action:

4 Detangling Tips for an Easier Washday

1. Don’t neglect off washday.

Postponing a washday is keeps your hair dirtier longer, AND allows more tangles to accumulate. Doesn’t that just sound like more work?!⠀

2. Always pre-poo.

Pre-pooing is applying oil to your hair strands before shampooing. Much like conditioners, oils provide slip, which facilitates the detangling process!⠀

3. Divide hair into sections when washing.

When you wash your hair in sections, you increase your productivity by concentrating on smaller pieces, which reduces the risk of tangling.

4. Apply conditioner generously.

Conditioner has ingredients that provide slip, allowing you to move through your hair in less time, and with less stress!

Trying one or more of these tips can significantly reduce tangling.

Always remember: Take. Your. Time!
